৮ মার্চ আন্তর্জাতিক নারী দিবস। এই দিনটিকে মনে রেখে এই বইটির কথা। Women : Cartoons on Discriminations। সম্পাদক : শ্যামমোহন। প্রকাশক : Asmita Resource Centre for Women, Secunderabad। সহযোগী : Forum for Political Cartoonists। বইটিতে রয়েছে নারী বিষয়ে, নারীর অধিকার-অধিকারহীনতা বিষয়ে কার্টুন। পৃথিবীর নানা দেশের কার্টুনচিত্রীদের আঁকা। সংগঠন দুটির তরফে দ্বিতীয় আন্তর্জাতিক কার্টুন প্রতিযোগিতা অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ২০০৫ সালে। বিষয় Discrimination against Women, নারী ও পুরুষের অসমতা। বইটিতে সেই কার্টুনগুলি।
বইটির ভূমিকাতে জরুরি কিছু কথা রয়েছে। ‘Asmita’s vision has been to create a gender-just society. Asmita… has constantly endeavoured to stretch and expand popular understanding of gender justice. … As a part of our advocacy we filed a complaint before the Press Council against The Asian Age for publishing a sexist cartoon. The Age had to publish an unconditional apology. Resisting stereotypes and attempting to invert/subvert them is important today. While there is a struggle for rights and entitlements these stereotypes and jokes subtly reverse the process forcing women to swallow humiliation to appear sporting and display a sense of humour. This process adds to disempowerment and a learned passivity in the face of humiliation. Cartoons have been the worst offenders in this matter.’
এঁদের উদ্যোগে এবং Forum for Political Cartoonist-দের সহযোগিতায় অনুষ্ঠিত কার্টুন প্রতিযোগিতায় খুব ভালো সাড়া পাওয়া গিয়েছিল।
বইটির ভূমিকায় লেখা আছে : ‘Although our own experience of cartoons and cartoonists is limited we realized their importance as a political medium and took up this effort. Andhra Pradesh can boast of excellent political cartoons but the gender perspective has been largely limited to the portrayal fat wives wielding rolling pins. In spite of the glaring inequalities and abuse of power in gender relations this has not been an overt concern of our cartoonists. We would like to see that the inequality, discrimination and power which characterize gender relations are portrayed with creativity, irony and humour by cartoonists today. This collection is a move in that direction.’
